Counselling is more than just a listening ear
The biggest misconception about counselling is that all you do is receive support and validation and have someone ‘just listen.’
So then, what is counselling?
Counselling is actually a deeply intimate professional relationship in which you can explore depths of honesty about your life within a container of emotional safety and support with someone who absolutely wants the best for you and your healing.
Counselling is having someone as a mirror to what you’re not seeing, where you’re getting stuck, and brainstorming alternate and helpful options, outside of the corner you have walked yourself into.
Counselling is about bringing the subconscious to the conscious.
It’s seeing the bigger issues in the little aggravations and seeing the themes in your reoccurring challenges.
Counselling is about exploring how your current challenge is specific to YOU; Your thinking styles, your upbringing, your beliefs, your expectations and your relationship to the world.
Counselling is also about the tough questions, that help you to get you unstuck from patterns, habits, avoidance and denial that is no longer serving you.
And it’s about interrupting a way of being that is so ingrained in you that you can barely notice it.
Here are some of the lightning bolt questions I asked this month in session that produced the most radical transformation were:
What’s the point of completing your mission if you lose your husband along the way?
Are you aware that you’re interrupting your healing by fantasising about the past?
Are you prepared to lose your wife because of your unwillingness to change?
Are you aware that you’re repeating the pattern to your wife what you loathe in her father?
Who are you hoping will come and rescue you?
Are you aware that you’re deeply enraged about your upbringing, and it comes out in your people pleasing?
It’s really important you have this conversation you’re avoiding, can you do it tonight?
My goal is to help you progress in hour healing and untie you from the webs you may have spun for yourself, so that you can find emotional freedom within yourself and the relationships you truly deeply value.
